Which Essential Oils to Use When You're GrievingDo you have essential oils at home? If so, you may find that using some of the oils can help you through the grieving process. If you don’t currently use essential oils, you may want to consider adding them to your life during this time of loss and grieving. Why? Essential oils may help you process the grief you are experiencing. Feelings of grief vary from day to day and essential oils can bring a source of outside, healthy, assistance to you in a very personalized way.

Here are a few ways to use essential oils to help you through the grieving process. Remember, you must go through the grief. It is not avoidable, however, oils can help you get through that process as emotions come and go. Grieving the loss of a loved one is a complex physical, psychological and emotional process and takes time. Essential oils are just one way to help yourself get through the grieving process.

Frankincense

Frankincense is considered a premiere essential oil as it can assist in many ways both physically and mentally. Frankincense may help combat the depression and decision-making difficulties many people experience during the grieving process. Frankincense is suggested to cause a calming in your mind that allows better clarity in thought and a deeper connection with God. It has a rich, deep, warm scent with a blend of balsamic and mild sweet tones.

Hyssop

Hyssop promotes creativity, meditation and a sense of centering or calmness. It has a fresh, earthy or woodsy scent mixed with a slightly sweet, fruity scent. It is known to promote a reduction in feelings of anxiety and tenseness. It also promotes a healthy appetite.

Orange and Lemon

Orange and lemon essential oils are both known as mood lifting oils. Both fruity scents are refreshing and invigorating and stimulate positive feelings. Orange can bring a sense of peace and happiness to the mind, body, and soul which may help overcome depression.

Lavender

Lavender is well known for its ability to assist people with relaxing and being able to sleep. It calms the nervous system and also promotes an overall sense of well-being. Lavender has multiple purposes, however, diffusing lavender as you go to bed at night might be the most beneficial for those who are grieving and not able to sleep well. Applying lavender to your temples and wrists may help you feel a sense of calmness during your waking hours.

Rosemary

Rosemary is energizing and uplifting. It’s also a stimulating oil, which means it can help you stay awake and present if you’ve been having a difficult time staying awake. Caution: Except in rare cases, don’t use rosemary within about 6 hrs of bedtime. Rosemary can help you move through the anger stages of grief. 

There are many other single oils or oil blends available to assist you through the mourning process. Some will help for a day. Some will help you over time. Each person has individual likes and dislikes when it comes to scents and this may impact the choices you make when using oils. Hopefully, the few oils shared here can get you started on using essential oils to help alleviate the stress grieving brings into your life.
