Mary Catherine Roberts (Mare) Friedlander, 88, Mendota Heights, MN passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on February 26th, 2018. She was born October 28, 1929 to Theresia (Solheid) Roberts in Villa Park, Illinois. The 4th of 6 children, Mary was raised in St. Paul, MN where she attended St Mark’s Catholic School and graduated from St Joseph’s Academy in 1947.
She married Donald Friedlander Sr, worked at Northwest Airlines, Wiss Shoe Company (as Secretary-Treasurer), and successfully raised 4 children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, brothers Jack and Thomas, and sister Margaret. Mary is survived by her brother Patrick, sister Rosemary, children Don Jr (Pam), Steve (Marie), Judy (Tom) Giel, and Suzy (Joe) Byers, grandchildren Melanie (Craig) Swenson, Liz Giel (Gerd Schweinitz), Michael (Laura) Byers, Jennifer (Chris) Lott, Sandra (Nick) Streiff, Nikko (Junita) Friedlander, great grandchildren Megan, Calan, and Ellianna Swenson, Tommy Schweinitz, Aiden, and Caleb Lott, and Isabella Streiff.
Mare loved spending time socializing with family and her many friends, was an avid bridge player, golfer at many clubs including Southview Country Club. She was a voracious reader, storyteller, and nursery rhyme expert. She loved poems and regaling children with the best rhymes, especially “Little Orphant Annie”. Mary was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and those lucky enough to know her were treated with warmth, kindness and her quick wit.
Her health quickly declined after a courageous battle against complications from a fall in November, 2017. We find solace knowing she’s in heaven, pain free, dancing cheek to cheek with the love of her life, our “Papa” Don.
Mass of Christian Burial 10:30AM Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Church of St. Peter, 1405 Sibley Memorial Hwy., Mendota. A visitation and celebration of her life will be held later that day from 4-7:30 PM at Southview Country Club, 239 Mendota Rd. E., West St. Paul. Memorials preferred to Our Lady of Peace Hospice.
