Dennis Robert Sorheim was born August 6, 1938 near Argonne, South Dakota to Anna and Harry Sorheim. Dennis died on February 12, 2021 (age 82) at the Little Hospice in Edina, Minnesota.
The youngest of five, Dennis was raised in Howard, SD until his family moved to Minneapolis when he was fifteen. He graduated from Minneapolis North High School and continued his education at St. Olaf College and graduated with a degree in English and minors in Norwegian and Music.
After college, his employment as a band director in Carthage, SD, led him to play cards at the Sneesby home where he met their daughter, Phyllis, who was still a college student at the time. On May 11, 1963, they were united in marriage and raised their kids Tona, Trent, and Scott in Minneapolis and then Mendota Heights.
He taught in Racine, WI, worked for Sons of Norway, and then spent over forty years working for Peoples Electric in St. Paul, MN. His first job as a child paper carrier also led to his “employment” through the generous time he spent supporting his kids with their paper routes.
Dennis loved hymns, playing the piano, appreciated classical music, and singing-especially if it was in Norwegian. He was involved in Glee Club, attended Guthrie events and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with friends. Bowling, investment club, skiing, card games, visiting, and serving on many other boards and committees also kept him busy over the years. His life was marked by dedication, integrity, and hard work.
Dennis was passionate about his Norwegian heritage, evident by his enjoyment and involvement with Vonheim Lodge, Norske Torske Klubben, Kontakt, Vesterheim, and of course Sons of Norway where he most notably served as the International President from 1994-1998.
Dennis held a deep faith in Christ and was a dedicated Augustana Lutheran Church member since 1978, and in more recent years was also involved at Mindekirken.
Those left to cherish his memory are the following: his children, Tona (Colin) Kerslake, Trent (Beatriz) Sorheim, and Scott (Jenny) Sorheim; his 8 grandchildren, Brittany, Parker, Nick, Alexis (Blaine), Riley, Kelby, Brooklyn, and Whitley; his siblings-in-law, Eldon Sneesby of Howard, SD and Jean Sneesby of SD, and many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his many friends that are a result of active involvement in his community all of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, in 2004, his parents Harry and Anna; his siblings, Lola (Robert) Fedde, Richard (Dorothy) Sorheim, Dwight Sorheim, Janice (Robert) Awes, many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
