Joyce Kvaalen Carlson April 9, 1927 - October 4, 2018

Joyce Kvaalen Carlson died October 4, 2018, age 91 at Lyngblomsten
Care Center in St. Paul, MN of complications from Parkinson’s disease. Joyce was born April 9,
1927 in Fairview, Montana. She grew up on the ranch that her father, a Norwegian immigrant,
homesteaded outside of Lambert, Montana. She had two older brothers, Oscar and Arne, and
an older sister, Gene. Joyce attended a one-room elementary school and graduated from
Lambert High School in 1944. That fall, she started at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN.
While in college, she met Harley Carlson who was returning to Concordia after WWII. Joyce
and Harley married in 1949 while he was in medical school at the University of Minnesota. They
lived in Sidney, MT (near her childhood home) for six years and then moved to Rochester in
1958, where Harley completed a radiology residency and joined the staff at the Mayo Clinic.
Joyce lived in Rochester for the next 59 years.
Joyce was never happier than with a house (or cabin) full of people. Her hospitality
extended to everyone she met. She was an accomplished hostess and cook and made it look
easy. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and active in her church and converted many to
Norwegianity. Joyce was in two sewing clubs (no one sewed, but dessert was served). She was
an excellent seamstress, making many beautiful pieces of clothing for herself, her daughters
and granddaughters.
Joyce never lost her love for the prairies and mountains of Montana, spending most
summers either on the ranch where she grew up, or in the Boulder River Canyon in the
Montana Rockies.
She is survived by her brother Arne Kvaalen of West Lafayette, IN, and sister, Gene
Carlson of St. Paul, MN, children Hans (Carol) Carlson of Jackson, Minnesota, Janna (Paul)
Carlson-Donohoe of Northfield, MN, Leif (Jessie) Carlson of St. Paul, MN, Berit (Peter)
Andreone of Sioux Falls, SD, and son-in-law David Griffin of St. Paul, MN. She is survived by all
her grandchildren: Trygve and Siri Carlson, Berit and Kirsten Griffin, Hannah (Lars) Esdal, Erin
and Soren Carlson-Donohoe, Ella and Hans Carlson, Gian and Michael Andreone, and great-grandson
Austin Carlson.
She was preceded in death by husband Harley Carlson, parents Oystein and Esther
Kvaalen, brother Oscar Kvaalen, and daughter Lisa Griffin.
