Russell Lyle Culver May 4, 1926 - December 2, 2018

Age 92, of Lilydale, former Baker, MT resident

Born May 4, 1926 in Cooperstown, N.D., he was the only child of Vernon and Florence Culver.  He and his parents moved to Richey, MT when he was ten years old where he attended grade school and high school, having graduated from Richey High School in 1944.  He qualified to graduate at mid-term of his senior year and he enlisted in the U.S.A.F.  After basic training and, although the conflict was over, he was among those sent by ship to the Philippines to relieve those who were to be sent home.  He served two years and was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, WA in 1946.  That fall he began his classes at what was then Montana State University (Missoula), graduating from Law School on June 5, 1950. On June 19th of that year Russ came to Baker, MT where he worked for Al Hansen, attorney, until Mr. Hansen’s death in 1963.  On June 5, 1955 Russ married Virginia Rae Brayton in Baker. Russ purchased the Fallon County Abstract Co. from the Hansen heirs and continued to operate the two combined businesses of abstract plant and law practice until July 1998 when The Fallon County Abstract Co. was sold to Gary and Linda Wade.  He served as city attorney from 1950 to 2011, a period of 61 years.  Always interested in the community, in which he lived, he has served as he was able in various ways.  He was active in the American Lutheran Church of Baker and deeply involved in the activities of the family.  As he was always there when needed, he was a caring husband and a great Dad.  He served on the Fallon County Planning Board and he and the others were instrumental in establishing KFLN Radio Station in Baker.  He served 13 years on the school board during the years that he had children in school. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Baker and a member of the American Bar Association and the Montana Bar Association. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia; two sons Brett and his wife Janice of West St. Paul, MN, Brad and his wife Jean of Princeton, MN and one daughter, Brenda (Andy) Wade of Vernon Hills, IL.  In addition, are two much loved grandchildren: Korissa and Jared (fiancé Lindsey) Culver. Should friends desire, the Family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of a contribution to American Lutheran Church in Baker, MT, 59313 or to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church at 1575 Charlton St., West St. Paul, MN  55118.

Funeral Service 11:00 Friday, December 7 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 1575 Charlton St., West St. Paul. Interment Riverview Cemetery. Visitation at church 1 hour prior to service.

I was very sad to hear about the loss of my very dear friend Russell, but I know that nobody deserves heaven more than him. What a prince of a guy. I always called him “the Andy Griffith of lawyers” because he was such a kind. common sense and caring man. It was never about the dollar, but instead about truly helping people. This world needs a whole lot more men like Russell. I know I will surely miss him and I am sure that many others in this world will too. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Virginia and his entire family. Susan and Boyd Plummer
