Thomas D. Gleason “Pops” October 29, 1926 - October 2, 2020

Passed away, age 93, on October 2, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born on October 29, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota to John and Lenore Gleason (brothers: Fr. John, Stephen, Joseph and sisters: Joan, Rosemary, and Helen) He attended grade school at  St. Columba, followed by 6 years at Nazareth Hall.  He joined the army in 1946 as a private in the 95th Light Tank Company and was stationed in Japan. He graduated from St. Thomas College in 1949 and then joined the National Guard. Pops worked as a teacher in Walnut Grove, then as an underwriter for Mutual Life and finished his career working for the state civil service department and the city of St Paul.

On May 21, 1955 Pops married Ann LaVerne Devaney (La) at St. Agnes Catholic Church. He loved her like no other; she was his queen.  Together they have 8 sons and 1 daughter, 40 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. They raised their children in St. Paul, MN, where he enjoyed listening to opera, bowling, long blade skating, playing cards, softball, and volleyball. They began as members of St Luke’s Catholic Church and later joined Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, both in St Paul. In 1987, he retired and moved to New London, MN. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic church, and was also an avid golfer, bridge player, reader, and crossword puzzler. This year, they celebrated 65 years together.

Pops had simple rules: love God and love each other. The mantra in his home was “Be nice to each other, because the nicest people in the world live in our house.” He valued honesty and respect above all.

What was Pop’s legacy? He lived his life with love: Love for God, love for his queen and love for his family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas John Gleason.                                                                 He is survived by his loving wife LaVerne, children Mike (Terri), Bill (Michele), Steve (Diane), Pat (Julie),  Ed (Pam), Dan (Missy), Bernadette (Jim), and Brian (Kathy), grandchildren (40) and great grandchildren (28).
