Obituary of Margaret McCarty

Passed away peacefully on April 6, 2014 surrounded by her family Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, former mayor of St. Paul and television personality, Charles P McCarty Jr., and her brother, Dr. Ralph Nelson. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Holland of Edina; her children, Pat (Linda), Michael (Janet), Peggy Grubbs (William), Peter, Mary Kelly English (Dr. Bruce Roberts), Stephen (Becky) and John (Linda); 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; her close friend of 50 years, Patsy Caron; and her loving friends, the McGrath, Kromhout and Caron Families. Margaret attended University High School and Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin. She married Charles in 1945 and devoted the next 30 years to raising her family. At age 52, Margaret unexpectedly became a widow with 3 teenagers at home. The difficult times that followed illuminated her strength of character. Margaret reinvented herself and became one of the first successful businesswomen on Grand Avenue. She owned and operated Maggie’s Corner Antique Shop-conducting estate sales throughout the Twin Cities. Margaret’s curiosity and interest in people fostered her ability to make and retain lifelong friends wherever she went. She forged her own path, leading with a gentle spirit and a compassionate heart that taught her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the meaning of unconditional love. Margaret appreciated beautiful music and was fortunate to travel the world with her friends and family. In her final days, Margaret was able to unite her family through her kindhearted presence. Visitation 3 to 7 PM Tuesday at Willwerscheid Funeral and Cremation, 1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Wednesday, St. Peter Claver Church (375 Oxford Street N, St. Paul, MN) officiated by Fr. Kevin McDonough with a lunch to follow at the Church. Private burial.
