Evelyn Holdhusen

Obituary of Evelyn A. Holdhusen

Evelyn (Evie) Holdhusen passed away peacefully on May 5, 2023 in her home in Inver Grove Heights, MN.

Evelyn Ardell Weismantel was born to William and Ida (Schliebe) Weismantel the 24th of February, 1928, at Columbia, SD. She was the ninth of 13 children. Her siblings include Harold Weismantel (deceased), Mildred James (deceased), Elnora Haas (deceased), Doris Cotton, Lorraine Krogman (deceased), Wilma Buntrock (deceased), Willis Weismantel (deceased), Ethel Bakken (deceased), Laverne Weismantel (deceased), Martin Weismantel (deceased), Fern Preston, and Arlene Spencer.

Evie was joined in marriage to Gerry Holdhusen in 1948. To this union were born six children: Chris (Reed) Sanderson of Sioux Falls, SD; Dan (Joannie) Holdhusen, Olathe, KS; Kathy (Alan) Wicks, West St. Paul, MN; David Holdhusen (deceased); Mark Holdhusen (died in infancy); and Doug Holdhusen (DJ) of Long Beach, CA. She had 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Evie spent most of her life in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where she worked for several businesses as bookkeeper and for South Brown Conservation District for several years after she and Gerry became empty nesters. She was especially proud of how many trees she would sell every year on behalf of the district.

After retirement, she served Bethlehem Lutheran Church in several capacities. She was a choir member, served on Church Council, Council President, and Sunday school teacher. She faithfully raised her children to become Christ followers.

Mom also enjoyed the social aspect of living at Parkside Retirement Apartments after Gerry’s passing in 2002. She was an avid kitchen volunteer and card player and continued to try her hand at gardening, a hobby she thoroughly enjoyed throughout her life. Of course her gardening led to canning and freezing of the produce. She passed her card-playing skills down to her grands.

One of Evie’s greatest attributes was that of nurturer. She spent countless hours with her siblings as their health worsened. Rarely did she consider herself first. Her heart was in service of others.
