Obituary of Robert H. Wood

Age 97, of West St. Paul Preceded in death by wife, Virginia. Survived by children, Judy (Don) Monson, Robert, II (Mary), Mark, grandchildren, Kathy (Billy), Jon, Mark (Julie), Mike (Jacque), Mylissa, Ann and Kate; great-grandchildren Hailey, Ethan, Austin, Matthew and Lynnea. Bob had a full life with wonderful friends and family. He entered the U of WI school of Chem. Eng. in 1936. WWII cut his studies short. In 1941 he joined the Army Air Corp. and ended up in the Air Transport Service Command where he flew all planes short of the jets. His service culminated in being one of the first pilots to fly into Japan as he and his crew flew over The USS Missouri when the armistice was signed in 1945. He returned to the U of MN, Forestry school, and graduated in 1948 whereupon he began a 30-year career at the 3M Co. retiring in 1978. In 1952 he joined the St. Paul Winter Carnival as a Vulcan (Barron Hot Sparkus). They re-knighted him in Jan. 2016. He loved rock hunting, helping his daughter in the apple orchard was a great father and grandfather and friend. Services 11:00 AM Friday, March 18 at AUGUSTANA LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1400 Robert St. So., West St. Paul. Interment Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation at Church 1 hour prior to service. Memorials preferred to Augustana Lutheran Church, Allina Hospice or Heart to Home.
