Obituary of Marilyn Ann Matt

August 14, 1929 – January 17, 2016 Marilyn Matt, 86, passed away on January 17, 2016 in United Hospital in St. Paul after suffering the effects of a sudden stroke less than a week earlier. She is preceded in death by beloved husband, Walter, daughter Mary (Jonathan) Williams, and four siblings, including her beloved older sister, Joan Beyer Swanson, who passed away suddenly just 36 hours prior to Marilyn’s passing. Marilyn is survived by children, Catherine (John) Laskey, Gretchen (James) Mills, W. Joseph (Christina) Matt, Jane (Colin) Cain, Joan (Joseph) Bourbeau, Michael (Carol) Matt, Christina Matt, and Carolyn (Thomas) Brannon. In addition to her 9 children, Marilyn also leaves behind 39 devoted grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She’s also survived by her cat, “Kitty”. A graduate of Derham Hall in St. Paul, Marilyn was the wife of Walter Matt, RIP, editor of The Wanderer and founder of The Remnant, two of the oldest Catholic newspapers in the country. Having lived her entire life in Minnesota, this St. Paul native is mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to 110 offspring who will miss her beyond measure. Marilyn’s wake will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home (1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul Minnesota) and the Requiem Mass will take place at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 21 at the Church of St. Augustine in South St. Paul (408 3rd Street N), followed by a luncheon at the Church of the Holy Trinity in South St. Paul (749 6th Ave South). In lieu of flowers, Masses for the deceased would be deeply appreciated, as well as prayers for the repose of her soul. God bless you, Granny. We’ll never forget and we’ll never stop loving you.
