Obituary of James Henry Michael

July 29, 1920 – March 7, 2014 Age 93, of St. Paul Jim was born in Minneapolis, then grew up in Ladysmith and Rice Lake, WI. He attended the University of Minnesota, studying pre-law. He left school to serve in WWII as a First Lieutenant in the Rainbow Division. After the war, he returned to UM Law School to earn his degree in 1947. In 1954, he married Carole Johnson of St. Paul. Jim was a remarkable man. He brought a lightness of being that would lift everyone’s spirits. As a husband, father, grandfather and friend, he displayed generosity and kindness. Life was something to be realized fully for Jim, whether with family or in his business pursuits. He was a prolific entrepreneur, boldly investing in businesses and ideas whenever his conviction could hold sway. He began his career in real estate and ventured into businesses ranging from eggs to lawn mower blades. Among his many achievements, he founded Michael Foods, acquired Knutson Construction Company, and financed the formation of CorVel Corporation. He loved to tell stories and recite phrases to cheer his companions. Jim loved to travel and explore the world, including living in Thailand for many years. He maintained a love of learning and was a passionate collector, principally of rare books. His humor and warmth toward others were ever present. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Caroline (Kleinman) Michael, sister Margaret Mary Devins and loving wife Carole. He is survived by his son Jeff, daughters Janette Hur, Jennifer Redlin, Roxanne Miller, Rosemary Bouvier, grandchildren Ian, Justine, Colin, Erin, Quinlan, Emilie, Sophie, Iris, Alex, Lauren, Angela, Anna, and Ella. One great-grandchild is expected. Jim, though your body may pass this day, your spirit will live on within us forever. Visitation will be held at 12:00PM on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home 1167 Grand Ave, St. Paul, MN. Service to follow at 1:00PM.
