Edward Altermatt

Obituary of Edward Alan Altermatt

Edward Alan Altermatt (Ed) passed away peacefully at the age of 88 with his family at his bedside. Ed spent his entire life in St. Paul where he graduated from Cretin High School and the University of Minnesota. He is survived by his loving wife Bernadette (Bunny), his children Tim, Teri (Kevin) Joyce, John (Anne), Angela Poppe and his grandchildren Amy (Tony) Vitulli, Tallieann Altermatt, Nathan Altermatt, AJ (Alissa) Kinney, Sean Kinney, Molly and Charles Altermatt, Alecia and Hannah Poppe and great-grandchildren Ayla Vitulli, Liam, Rayah and Kaydence Minor and Isabelle Kinney. Ed was known by many as “Mr. St. Paul”. He was very active in the community with his work and volunteering. He retired from 3M after over 30 years as a human resource executive. He volunteered as a United Way Campaign Project Manager. He was the former Executive Director of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Association and he co-founded the St. Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation. He became involved in St. Paul Winter Carnival when he joined the 1973 Vulcan Krewe and led the 1984 Vulcan Krewe as Vulcanus Rex 47th. He enjoyed working at the Lexington restaurant as a maître d in his retirement where he knew more than half the customers that came into the restaurant. He found peace sitting by the water. He spent his winters in Florida and his summers on a lake up north drinking a glass of wine and watching his family enjoy the legacy he created. This self-made man was a role model, mentor and inspiration to all who are looking to do the right thing.

He will be missed by many.
