Alice Schletty

Obituary of Alice Gurine Schletty

Alice was born and raised in Bemidji, MN. Her family owned and operated Tranquilla Resort on Big Lake, and it was there that she developed her cheerful outgoing demeanor and inclination to help others. After graduating from Bemidji High School, she briefly attended Bemidji State University before moving to the Twin Cities. She soon met her future husband (Joe Schletty), while out with friends, and it was smooth sailing from there.

Alice was a supportive spouse, loving mother, reliable friend and so much more. She raised her 4 children, as a stay-at-home mom, for many years, before beginning her career caring for others as a food service worker (Lunch Lady extraordinaire) at St. Matthew’s Grade School. It was there that she was able to spread her joyous love through the food she cooked and the smiles she shared with all the students that passed her way.

Alice will be remembered for her ability to gab and chitchat. As much as she loved to talk, she was also a kind and considerate listener. She had an innate ability to connect with people. Although the final years of Alice’s life were impaired with physical struggles and ailments, associated with her ALS diagnosis, she pushed through with her ever-optimistic outlook. We are all fortunate to have been able to get to know and spend time with her. To simply say she will be missed is an understatement, as she leaves a void in the hearts of many!

Alice is preceded in death by parents, Henry and Gurine Brune; the love of her life and husband of 41 years, Joe; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Kathy Brune; and daughter-in-law, Lateresa Schletty. She is survived by her children, David (Katie), Matthew, Nicholas (Meghan), and Sarah (Dave) Hanson; grandchildren, Cheyanne, Jordon, Desmond, Deporess, Nora, Allyse, Shiloh, Caleila, Matthew Jr., Lilly, Benaiah, Cece, Joey and Enzo; siblings Janette (Darrell) Erickson, Jim (Helima) Brune, Joe (Connie) Brune, Ann (John) Carlson and Lisa (Joe) Helm; and many other relatives and friends.

Thank you to ALL who cared for and supported Alice in the final years of her life. It meant everything to her to stay in her home, and that was made possible by friends, family and caregivers who showed love and compassion for her every day. A special thanks to the ALS Association and Allina Hospice for the services they provided. We are forever grateful!

“There are no happy endings.

Endings are the saddest part,

So just give me a happy middle

And a very happy start.”

― Shel Silverstein
