



Obituary of Mustafa Muharrem Aksoy
Dr Mustafa Muharrem (Barney) Aksoy, age 91, died peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2023. Barney lived a full life. He moved to the United States from Turkey in 1956 to complete his residency in OB/GYN. During his residency at St Mary’s hospital in Minneapolis, he met the love of his life, Nancy. They married in 1962 and Barney decided to become a US citizen. After moving back to Turkey for 2 years, they returned with their two children. Barney had a long career as department head at Group Health (Health Partners). From the late 1960’s to 1996, he delivered thousands of babies and brought the first midwifery program to the Twin Cities. After his retirement, Barney enjoyed time with his family in Sanibel Island and at the cabin in Longville. He enjoyed traveling, had many friends, loved dinner parties, playing tennis and the mandolin, Vikings games, his cars and their home and neighbors in Edina. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Barney is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Cully. Barney is survived by his three daughters, Deniz Stanton (Chris), Peri Flanagan (Peter) and Suzan Aksoy and his 9 grandchildren; Josef (Libby), Paul (Hannah), Thomas (Andrea), Hannah, Matthew, William, Jack, Lily, John and his great grandson, Archie. We would like to thank the kind staff at Stonecrest and Optage Hospice for their tender care and support. The memorial service will be held at Willwerscheid Funeral Home in St Paul (1167 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, MN) at 11am on Friday, August 4th, followed by a burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights. Reception will be held at Axels (1318 Sibley Memorial Highway, Mendota, MN) at 1-3:30 pm.
