Obituary of Johannes Buursema

Johannes (John) Buursema of West St. Paul passed away at the age of 96 on August 15, 2023. He was born in the Netherlands and served in the Royal Dutch Navy. He immigrated with his wife Coby to the U.S. in 1957 and had an accomplished career in ship building. He was a proud father of four daughters and had an active lifestyle that included biking and running events into the later years of his life.

John lived his life with integrity, compassion and determination. He was accomplished and respected in his profession. In retirement, he biked in 10 TRAMS, medaled in numerous bike races and track including several Senior Olympics, enjoyed being outside in his garden, and sharing a cup of coffee with family and friends.

Preceded in death by his beloved daughter Carolyn Swanson. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him including his wife of 65 years, Coby Buursema; daughters Monique Buursema (husband John Weikert), Yolanda Wold (husband Wayne) and Inez Avery (husband John); son-in-law Eric Swanson; grandchildren Lindsay Swanson (husband Brandon Butler), Dr. Kaitlin Swanson Ingram (husband Dr. Michael Ingram), Joseph Weikert, Makayla and Annika Wold, and Caden and Ethan Avery; and great grandson Edward Butler.
