Obituary of Stephen Edward Hughes
Stephen Edward Hughes of Saint Paul, Age 59
We are sad to announce the passing of Steve Hughes on March 6, 2024 after a life long battle with Spinocerebellar Ataxia. A long-time resident of Saint Paul (Lombard Ave.), Steve is a local legend that touched the lives and inspired many people with his courage, friendliness, laughter, amazing smile, ever loving eyes and determination to do the things he loved to do: attend school, swim, fish, ride in the golf cart, bowl, serve as bat boy for the Tigers little league baseball team at Linwood Park, cheer for the Vikings and the Twins, cruise the neighborhood in his electric wheelchair, and work at Midwest Special Services. His involvement and impact on our lives is everlasting. We are thankful for all of the joy he brought to our family, and would like to sincerely thank the many people and institutions (too many to name) who made Steve’s triumphant life journey possible by encouraging, caring for and loving him.
Preceded in death by his Father Frank.
Steve is survived by his Mother Bernadette; Siblings Dan (Josephine), Mike (Kristin), Paul (Angie), Nate (Liz), Jake (Lily), Sarah, Joe (Isabel); many Cousins; and Nieces and Nephews.
Visitation will be held at Willwerscheid Funeral Home on Grand Avenue on March 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on March 13 at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church on Summit Avenue (with Visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m.).
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Living Well Disability Services (livingwell.org), which provided a loving and caring home for Steve since 2019.
