Dear Antoniou Family:
I just now learned of John's passing--so sad to see this. He was a major figure in my childhood and always represented integrity, authority, warmth, and soccer! I can still see his kind smile, and remember his devotion to his family, and his own mother and commitment to excellence. He talked to me as if I was an adult when I was (probably an obnoxious) child--and his memory will always be entwined with my own childhood in St Paul. May his memory always be a blessing!

My beloved uncle John, farewell-goodbye / Have a good journey...
May God, who you loved so much, believed always - and still you love & believe -, rest your soul. Your soul, your face-form & character, although for long periods far away... was so close to us, so familiar and true. (your soul) Was, is and will be, of course, forever in us, we carry “her” in our soul as an (‘ακριβή’)-precious "presence" and living memory. I always remember you - we will always remember you, for all that you shared with us from your own life... Your inexhaustible energy, your vitality, the mood to create, for life itself in the end. For your pleasant and playful spirit, your 'nerve', your jokes, your teasing, your “loud” laughter, the songs of the old times that you loved, always looking for and listened to it constantly, for you sang some’ of them when we gathered as a whole family, at Easter tables or summers, in feasts and joys... For the old stories you used to tell, also from the village and from your early life in Athens, before you met the woman of your life, our beloved aunt Marina, and from that time and on you settled permanently in northern climates of Minnesota U.S., at your new home, St. Paul-TheTwin/cities. You’re fighting alright there too and succeeded exceptionally well: personally-familiarly, socially and professionally. You also achieved something else, no easier than the previous ones: despite being so far away, you, Aunt Marina, Anna and George, with your own energy and dedicated will, managed to create and maintain strong and meaningful bonds between all of us- from your much-loved mother - and my grandmother - Anna, your sisters and your little ones like us, your nephews/nieces, the “first cousins” of the whole family... How can I forget, of course, our conversations here and there… from my trip in America... how you and my aunt hosted me, where you took me, how beautifully you offered me generously from your heart… Thank you, my dearest uncle, for these and much more that I shared with you. All of us here love you & remember you, your sister Filia, Takis Katsaros, your niece Thania, our Maria...
You made that “so far… So close”. I & we all (whole family) remember and love you. Always
your nephew, Nikos

One of my all time favorite memories of Theo Yanni is the day after church he took us to watch the planes take off and land at the airport. It was just us kids -Anna, George, Demetre and me - we were probably 12 and 8 years old. Looking back, I think he was as excited as we were to watch the planes. And he was truly delighted that this simple excursion created so much joy in us kids. May his memory be eternal.
